Biography

Pen Sokhom is the most prominent member of the generation of Cambodian women fighters who came up in the wake of Him Sreymom and Nou Srey Pov's pioneering work, inheriting both the platform they fought to create and the cultural shift in attitudes toward female athletes. Born in a rice-farming village outside Battambang in 2000, she began training in a small provincial gym at age ten alongside her older brother, and by fourteen she was winning amateur tournaments throughout the northwest. Her selection to the national team in 2021 was followed by a breakout 2023 in which she captured SEA Games gold in Phnom Penh in front of a home crowd, an emotional moment that was broadcast across Cambodia and helped cement women's Kun Khmer as a serious competitive division rather than a novelty. Unlike many fighters of her generation, Sokhom remained based in Battambang rather than relocating to the capital, training at a converted warehouse gym under a husband-and-wife Kru team who emphasize technique over volume. She is known for her composed demeanor and her habit of performing an unusually slow, deliberate Wai Kru that has become a signature on broadcasts. Her nickname "The Lotus" was given by her first Kru and reflects both her provincial origins and the quiet poise she carries into the ring.

Signature Technique

Sok Tee Chiang (Slashing Diagonal Elbow)

The Sok Tee Chiang is the defining weapon in Pen Sokhom's arsenal. This technique, deeply rooted in the traditional Kun Khmer striking system, became synonymous with "The Lotus" throughout their career.

Fighting Style

Sokhom is a technical counter-fighter built around sharp elbow work in the pocket. She fights from a tall, square stance with the lead hand held low to invite engagement, then slips and counters with slashing diagonal elbows that cut and stun opponents who try to close on her. Her footwork emphasizes small lateral pivots rather than ring-cutting pressure, and she is willing to give ground to set up her counters. She uses a long teep kick to manage distance and rarely engages in extended clinch exchanges, preferring to break grips with frames and re-establish striking range.

Legacy

Pen Sokhom represents the maturation of women's Kun Khmer from a pioneering frontier into a structured competitive division with real depth. Her SEA Games gold at home was a generational moment for Cambodian women's sports, and her decision to remain based in Battambang has helped strengthen provincial gyms that might otherwise have lost talent to Phnom Penh. She has become a quiet role model for rural Cambodian girls in particular, demonstrating that elite-level success does not require relocating to the capital.
